thanks Anne. I always remove the “spent” blossoms, which in this case last only a few hours or a day. Daughter asked me why I insist on removing the “husks” when they are still attractive from a distance; I believe removing the spent flower is good for the plant…I do the same thing with Rose of Sharon.
LikeLike
I never pulled old blooms from Rose of Sharon. Maybe I should. I do cut off old roses and daffodils.
LikeLike
hmmm, now I’m wondering if I should do that. I am very easily influenced 🙂 I have always thought that a plant is strengthened by the pruning. When my son worked at a greenhouse he was told that the blooms are not “dead,” they are “spent.” semantics 🙂

I wouldn’t know the difference between dead and spent. I’d say I spent money on plants, and they are dead. It’s a natural progression at our house.
LikeLike
dead is dead, lying on the ground with people walking on it… “spent” refers to have-been flowers in a later stage of life, before they completely dry up and fall off.

it sort of speaks to the old adage about the bloom being off the roses, doesn’t it? I personally am a faded old blossom, but that’s all relative I guess.

I do try to avoid falling on my face, but often I intend to do a lot more than I actually do…I overwhelm easy. The flooring people are coming soon to install new flooring in my living, dining, kitchen area. I’ve packed up the china cabinet stuff and cleaned under the refrigerator (always a sobering task…) I’m trying to organize the move rather than just willy-nilly move the general state of chaos as it exists.

You are very organized with this! Hope it goes well.

organized…me? I forgot what my comment was 🙂

LOL! You were planning to be organized about work in the house and intended to avoid chaos. It sounded good in print, anyway.

Yesterday we got the giant tarp up over my back deck. That was a major hassle! I think the floor people are coming on Tuesday; I have most of the stuff moved that I can move, so it is stashed away in unlikely places. I didn’t want to pack up the stuff from the china cabinets since it is going right back in as soon as the floor is done, so it is shelved in the pantry, laundry room, and other available space.

Good luck. I hope it goes smoothly.

the trick is to be able to tie it back to let sun and warmth in, and also to untie it and make walls for the cat shelter.

I managed to mess up the settings on my camera, and although I did get some decent shots at the porch-rocker event, the modern technology overwhelmed me. Point-n-shoot is my level apparently.

I never got beyond point and shoot, but that is much better than nothing!

I decided to read the manual. It’s online, or I would have read it long ago.

I’ve read on-line manuals, too. I still find a printed manual more satisfying.
LikeLike
ah you are a gal after my own heart…I printed out the online manual. I prefer the printed word as well, as trying to “flip” through virtual pages is frustrating. I still use underlining and yellow markers.

Flipping through virtual pages could make one flip for real!

I took a lot of pix at Granddaughters rock performance last week, but I was hemmed in so there wasn’t much variety. I got a lot more last year when I could wander around and get more exposures.

Usually I make sure I get a good location for photos, but can’t always manage in a smallish-disorganized venue like a side street front yard.

Of course, your photography background would cause you to look for a vantage point. Some places would be limited.

although I am shy about pushing for location, I admit that when it comes to photography position is everything.

I like a paper print-out, useful with a yellow marker or pencil notes at least. I’ve been making the transition from paper-n-pencil to pure on-line. I’m old school though.

They always look like such ‘happy’ flowers.

Yes, they do look happy. Like daffodils are always so proud to be among the first in the spring, and often defy deep snow to show off.

🙂 I have to go to the bank to get cash for me and Scott; we are going to granddaughter’s performance this afternoon….last year her band was the headliner, on the main stage, but this year she will be performing on a different “stage.” It’s the annual “porch-rocker” event in Akron, Ohio. (Other cities around the country also have the venue.)

Oh! Wish her all the best. And don’t dance too wildly. Don’t want to show those kids up too much. :p

It was great! This time they were actually on someone’s front porch on a street…the event is Porchrockr… where the individual bands play. Last year her band was the headliner at the event on the main stage. There was a huge crowd but we (Daughters 1 and 2) sat on some sofas out on the front lawn. 🙂

lol – it sounds like a huge amount of fun. 🙂

I think there were about 90 local bands involved this year. The porchrockr thing is held also in other places like Pennsylvania.

our political situation is deteriorating…I wouldn’t rule out anything at all. We have never been in this precarious of a state. It is very frightening, but so many (the crazy base) is pretty much whipped up in rallies, etc. and they are the “don’t know and don’t care” bunch. yikes!

The last day or so has been insane here and made me realise something: almost all politicians are out of touch with voters. Doesn’t help that their egos are deliberately fed by members of the Right Wing media who see themselves as king makers. As a result, these politicians truly believe their own propaganda. But eventually they get a wake up call. It’s starting to happen here. I hope it’ll happen over there for your GOP as well. Seeing only what you want to see is a recipe for disaster.
